Memphis, TN 2007 National Conference on Media Reform

Press Release Body = Laura Washington, an In These Times senior editor, multi-media
journalist, Ida B. Wells-Barnett University Professor at DePaul University in
Chicago and columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times addressed a standing room only crowd
this alongside a star-studded A list of media luminaries in Memphis this month with
the expressed goal of reforming the power of Big Media. Laura is also a frequent
commentator on National Public Radio (NPR) and internationally known for her
distinctive voice of gravitas and cutting edge, brave journalism.

\"Inside Corporate Media: Can Corporate Media Tell the Truth?\" moderated by the
legendary TV host Phil Donahue, was the title of the panel that presented an
insightful, behind the scenes view of corporate media pressures and conservative
influences that shape multi media news channels. Ms. Washington is a graduate of the
Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. Describing the most
fundamental dictate of journalism which emphasizes \"objectivity\", she declared that,
there is \"no such thing as objectivity\" in reporting and that \"both guys spin their
lies, and no one can call them on it.\"

After the panel discussion, when asked if fellow Medill School of Journalism
graduate and the Father of Truthiness himself, Mr. Stephen Colbert, might best
answer the corporate media \"truthiness\" question, Ms. Washington enthusiastically
responded \"I would love to go on the Stephen Colbert Show to pin him down.\"

Additional media journalists on the panel included Jeff Cohen, author, Cable News
Confidential, Flavia Colgan, MSNBC and Philadelphia Daily News, and Juan Gonzalez,
New York Daily News and Democracy Now.
